Our Story Through the Years

Our Beginnings (1926–1927)

In 1926, many local residents worked on the Berry Hill, Hairston, and Oak Hill plantations. They were sharecroppers—hard-working, family-oriented people who valued faith and community.

With no nearby church, they built a simple brush arbor where Harmony Church now stands. Brother M.O. “Buddy” Harvell led a revival that lasted for weeks, inspiring the founding of Harmony Church in 1927 under his leadership and trustees Doss Ross, C. Peter Burnett, and J. Kyle Robertson.

Building the Church

The congregation purchased land for $1.00 from Alice Glenn White and used lumber from the old Harmony School to build the first sanctuary. Over the decades, the church expanded—adding bathrooms and classrooms in 1970, a fellowship hall in 1980, and a three-story addition in 2000 with more classrooms, a full kitchen, and pantry.

Harmony Today

In 2001, Harmony purchased an additional five acres for future growth. In 2022, the church became an independent, non-denominational congregation. Under the leadership of Pastor Butch Salmons, Harmony continues to be known as “the little church on the hill,” where faith, fellowship, and service thrive.
